Painted turtles are found in rivers, ponds and lakes across North America. Their beautiful “painted” shells not only give them their name but keep them safe too.

When danger appears, they tuck away their soft little scaly head and legs inside. As soon as the coast is clear, they pop them back out and carry on swimming safe as can be.

As cool as their shells are, the most fascinating thing about painted turtles is the way they breathe. On dry land, they breathe through their noses like we do. But below the waves they have a trick up their… bums. They can breathe through them!
